A huge thank you to everyone involved in Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California! We couldn’t have pulled it off without the hundreds of volunteers who dedicated their time, our local partners who helped bring the Tour back to Santa Rosa, the hard-working staff who organized an event that ran so smoothly, and an incredible estimated 40,000 spectators who came out to downtown Santa Rosa to cheer on the cyclists!
The clouds parted for a sunny day with an exciting Stage 1 along the beautiful Sonoma County route, a great turnout for the Lifestyle Festival, a Breakaway Mile to celebrate cancer survivors, and several entertaining ancillary events.
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale won first place of Stage 1, Heinrich Haussler of Team Garmin-Barracuda came in second place, and Jeffry Louder of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team took third. Our hometown hero Levi Leipheimer, who rode on a broken leg, was awarded the Most Courageous Rider Jersey.
