New Year’s Resolution

Develop a Home Fire Escape Plan

Six Steps to a Fire-Safe New Year ...

1 - Draw a floor plan of your home

Know at least two ways out of each room and show them on your floor plan. Click here for fire escape plan drawing help.

2 - Learn your escape routes and keep them clear

If your escape route is a window, be sure it is not painted shut, blocked by furniture, or has a screwed-on screen or security bars that cannot open.

3 - Decide on a meeting place outside your home

Choose a meeting spot away from the residence where every member of the household will meet after they have escaped from a fire.

4 - Know how to contact the fire department

9-1-1 is the number for reporting an emergency.  However, if you are calling from a cell phone, you must dial 707-576-1365 to go directly to the Sonoma county dispatch.  Pre-program this in your cell phone now!

5 - Teach emergency procedures to your children

Fire and smoke are frightening and the impulse to hide is natural.  You must teach your children, even very young children, how to escape from a fire and never hide.

6 - Hold an emergency drill every six months

The more you practice, you more you’re prepared.
