Neighborhood Programs

The City of Santa Rosa Recreation, Parks & Community Services offers neighborhood based gang prevention programs through its Neighborhood Services section. While these programs have been around for 16 years providing drop-in activities for youth in our community, Neighborhood Services unveiled a new program delivery model in September 2010 providing structured gang prevention programming to both youth and families. A partnership with the Redwood Empire Food Bank provides a daily free snack program for all youth up to 18 years old. After snack, all four neighborhood sites provide a daily, one hour homework period with assistance and mentoring from staff and volunteers. As an incentive and target to encourage achievement and success, youth who regularly attend the homework portion of the program are eligible for future field trips to such places as the beach, San Francisco, and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. In addition, the new program model now features organized clubs and classes such as sports, dance, singing, and art; all participating youth have an opportunity to suggest ideas for future clubs and classes. The evolution of these programs centers around the development of youth’s healthy habits, success in school, learning of new skills, and engagement in positive activities all while also building healthy relationships with peers, adults, and their community.
