NED KAHN
AT&T Building Art Project: Digitized Field
The City of Santa Rosa is proud to host this spectacular public art work that is now a landmark for downtown Santa Rosa. Internationally renowned, award-winning artist, Ned Kahn, created this public artwork on the AT&T (formally SBC) Building, 516 3rd Street in Santa Rosa, in 2004. This artwork is a fascinating "wind-animated art installation that brings art to life with vivid movement and reflection of environmental colors!"
Ned Kahn's artwork is an immense sculpture, 40 feet wide and 62 feet tall consisting of a field of 3 inch by 3-inch aluminum leaves that are hinged so they move feely in the wind. The artwork is visible as cars and pedestrians enter the city center and can be scene from the freeway.
We would like to thank those who have contributed to making this project a reality: Ron Casentini, Jack Stuppin, the Voigt Family, Charles Evans and AT&T.
Garage 9 Installation: Nine
Originally designed as Phase II of the AT&T Building project, Ned Kahn developed this piece to complement Phase I, Digitized Field. Both are large public artworks located in downtown Santa Rosa that reflect and incorporate the elements of light and wind.
For the installation on Garage 9, a series of stainless steel cables were tensioned across the space between the two circular access ramps. Hanging from the cables are approximately 20,000 small reflective pieces of glass that move in the wind and reflect light. Resembling a series of parallel spider webs, the artwork is visible from many vantage ponts inside the parking structure and in the courtyard below.
Thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the city was able to bring more of Kahn's internationally reknowned artwork to Santa Rosa.
