ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

NEWS:

Public Art

CALL FOR ARTISTS: ARTIST BILLBOARDS

EXTENDED DEADLINE: February 10, 2012

In the spirit of phantom galleries, the Artist Billboard Project aims to place artwork in vacant spaces around Santa Rosa. Instead of occupying vacant buildings, this project will place artist designed and fabricated billboards in empty lots throughout the city on a temporary basis. Finished works will be installed in available locations as determined by the City of Santa Rosa.

The purpose of Santa Rosa's Art in Public Places Program is to enrich the community by integrating a wide range of art into public spaces, recognizing that art in a public setting is vital to a livable community. Program goals include:

  • Humanizing the urban environment through high-quality artistic works that enliven public spaces

  • Enabling artists to advance their art forms

  • Providing opportunities for artists to help revitalize neighborhoods and redevelopment areas

  • Encouraging the preservation of cultural traditions.

The Art in Public Places Committee (APPC) oversees the Public Art Program in Santa Rosa. The APPC develops policies and goals for the selection, placement and maintenance of works of art. The APPC strives to ensure excellence in the public collection by active participation in a sequence of selection stages of art projects.
