Courthouse Square Design Competition

The goal of the design competition was to complete the decision process for the future of Courthouse Square by utilizing a design competition which evaluates the various alternatives for renovation.

Objectives:

  • Utilize a design competition to evaluate the various alternatives for renovation and present to City Council for consideration
  • Create public forums for airing of views on Courthouse Square as part of the competition process and prior to final decision
  • Identify possible funding sources for Courthouse Square renovation
  • Explore changing land use designation adjacent to Courthouse Square

'Courthouse Square is the town center of Santa Rosa and is the focal point of downtown. Its landscaped spaces and plaza areas provide for a range of activities, performances, and entertainment right in the heart of downtown. It attracts business activity and patrons, retail facilities and shoppers, and performers and audiences. It is a distinctive place that residents can take pride in identifying as center of their hometown.' -Santa Rosa 2020: General Plan; Vision Statement

This project will enhance the existing community and regional focus on the courthouse square area and encourage the downtown area as a destination. Redesigning the courthouse square area will enhance its sustainability as a focused pedestrian-friendly and transit oriented district.
