Police Field and Evidence Technicians
Police Field and Evidence Technicians play an important role in the Santa Rosa Police Department. Although Police Field and Evidence Technicians are unarmed civilian employees, they perform many of the same duties as Santa Rosa Police Officers. Police Field and Evidence Technicians are assigned specially equipped marked vehicles and are dispatched to calls in the same manner as Police Officers. Police Field and Evidence Technicians are not dispatched to calls where the potential for a violent confrontation exists.
Police Field and Evidence Technicians are highly trained in their duties and are able to give focused attention to crime scenes because of their specialized training and equipment. Many times, citizens reporting a crime are unaware of this fact and have attempted to send the Technician away in favor of a Police Officer. This would only result in a Police Officer being taken off the street for several hours when a Police Field and Evidence Technician is completely capable of performing the same duty. Some of the Field Technicians duties include:
- Crime scene processing for all types of crimes, including murder and assaults.
- Traffic accident reports.
- Crime Reports where the suspect is not present nor is arrest imminent.
- Vehicle Abatement.
- Traffic Control.
Several Police Field and Evidence Technicians work in grant-funded positions. These special assignments include:
Police Field and Evidence Technicians are hard working individuals who deserve credit for performing a very important and challenging role within the Santa Rosa Police Department. Because they handle traffic accidents and "cold" crime reports, they keep Police Officers free to patrol neighborhoods and handle emergency calls.
