Redevelopment: Building a Better Community Parks & Preservation |
By focusing improvement efforts on urban areas, redevelopment agencies encourage “infill” development in areas where roads, utilities and other buildings already exist. This discourages urban sprawl – development that continually spreads outward from an urban core.
When residents and business owners join forces with our local government in a redevelopment area, they can help the community to preserve open space and build new parks, public plazas, and recreational facilities. Parks and open spaces improve our physical and mental health, strengthen our community, and make Santa Rosa a more attractive place to live and work! |
By providing seed money to attract other funding sources, redevelopment served as a key player in a community and multi-agency partnership that implemented the Prince Memorial Greenway vision, transforming a neglected creek into a stunning gateway to downtown, an urban delight for people and restored riparian habitat for endangered salmon and steelhead as well as other wildlife.
Redevelopment can also play a leadership role in the remediation of Brownfields, (i.e. contaminated properties or properties that otherwise pose an environmental threat) as well as preserving historic properties like the former main Santa Rosa post office, now the Sonoma County Museum. |
